General Knowledge : Other Uses for Oil

Although oil is primarily an energy source, it is also used as a raw material in manufacturing more than a thousand other products including; plastics, paints, fertilizers, detergents, cosmetics, insecticides, and even food supplements.

There are thousands of petroleum products in use today. This figure shows some of the more familiar ones. At the refinery, crude oil is separated into "fractions" (it’s component parts) through distillation. Some of these fractions, through simple treating, are converted to final petroleum products at the refinery, such as:
  • Bottled Gas
  • Gasoline
  • Jet Fuel
  • Fuel Oil(for home heating)
  • Fuel Oil(for factories)
  • Diesel Oil and others
Other refined products require further processing at chemical plants and factories showing up as final consumer products, e.g.:
  • Solvent for paints
  • Insecticides
  • Medicines
  • Synthetic Fibers
  • Enamel
  • Detergents
  • Weed Killers & Fertilizers
  • Plastics
  • Synthetic Rubber
  • Photographic Film
  • Candles
  • Waxed Paper
  • Polish
  • Ointments & Creams
  • Roofing
  • Protective Paints
  • Asphalt
